Press Release

Water Quality Assurance Measures for Moberly Drinking Water - Annual System Maintenance

Drinking water protection remains top priority for Moberly Public Utilities

(Moberly, MO – September 12, 2024)   Delivering clean, safe drinking water to families across the community requires constant attention and monitoring water quality throughout the system. Flushing the distribution system is one step the Department of Public Utilities takes each year. Flushing the mains removes sediment from the water mains and brings fresh water to the ends of the system that may not see sufficient flows to scour the pipes.

Also, Public Utilities proactively makes a short-term change in the type of disinfectant used to ensure we’re meeting water quality standards from the water treatment plant all the way to the customer. This change is not permanent and is precautionary until tests across the distribution system indicate the change is no longer necessary.

On or around Monday, September 16, 2024, the Public Utilities Department will begin the process to switch from chloramines to chlorine. Hydrant flushing will continue until testing indicates that the measures have been completed throughout our drinking water distribution system. This process is anticipated to be completed in one month or less.

Water quality standards will be maintained throughout this process and water will remain safe to drink. Although not anticipated, some customers may notice slight changes in the taste or odor of the water from their taps. These changes are aesthetic and typically can be eliminated by simply allowing water to flow for a few minutes from faucets throughout the home or business. There may also be a slight, temporary decrease in pressure if the water tap is near a hydrant that is being flushed.
